Goals!

We are doing this project, so we can get a feel for the air quality in different neighborhoods around chicago. Lichen helps determine air quality, therefore, we will go about determining air quality through lichen surveys.

Anyone can help by collecting lichen surveys in their individual neighborhoods. The more variation we get of neighborhoods, the better. All you have to do is make your lichen grid tester, and record your data via the method mentioned previously.

Proposed topic or question(s):

What are the differing amounts of lichen in each neighborhood and what it means about the air quality?

Variables (what are the living and non-living factors to consider?):

  • Location (relative to the street, the sun, water, etc.)

  • thee type of tree

  • general air quality of area

  • type of lichen growing

Data collection (what data will you collect?)

  • Date

  • Time Collected

  • GPS Location

  • Type of Tree (Maple or Ash)

  • Photos of Lichen, Tree, and Area

  • Distance from the street (in meters)

  • Type of Lichen

  • Amount of Lichen in Quadrant 1, 2, 3, and 4

  • Humidity and Temperature

  • Field Number (optional)

Locations: We want samples from everywhere on earth. We like anywhere with lichen. If you have the time jot down some lichen samples and return the data to us.

My group so far has covered places like:

-Lawns around the Peggy Notebaert Nature Meusuem.

-North pond/South pond/Lily Pond.(In Chicago)
